Virginia's Northern Neck Peninsula is the “birthplace of our nation” with three of the first five American presidents being born here, along with other prominent families that helped form our nation and its principles. The property that is now entrusted to the James Monroe Memorial Foundation is part of a 74-acre county park that runs from the main highway to a pier at Monroe Creek and sits just outside of Colonial Beach proper. .
Sharing Monroe’s Legacy
The James Monroe Birthplace & Boyhood Home interprets the remarkable journey of a man who grew up along Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay, studied at the College of William & Mary, and carried his Virginia ideals to Washington, D.C., where he became a pioneer of foreign policy and a visionary for America’s expansion.
This is where Monroe’s story began in a modest rural farmhouse; the site and surrounding park share the environmental story of the land, farm, woodland, and marsh that shaped his early life. They stand as a vivid reminder of the world in which Virginians lived in the late 1750s.
