Anna Bowerman of Towne Bank Presents a Check

Anna Bowerman (right) of the Towne Bank Foundation, presents a check to Mark Walsh (left), James Monroe Memorial Foundation, to fund expenses for Elise Harding Davis - an African-Canadian historian who will speak on the effect of the Rush Bagot Agreement on the Underground Railroad.  The presentation will take place at Fort Monroe at 10:00 a.m. on July 4th, in honor of the 186th anniversary of President Monroe's death, and the bicentennial of the Rush-Bagot agreement between Great Britain (later Canada) and the United States.  This treaty in President Monroe's first term in office has led to the world's longest undefended border.
The event is co-sponsored by the James Monroe Memorial Foundation, the Towne Bank Foundation, Fort Monroe National Monument (National Park Service), and Fort Monroe Authority.
